Peter Forsberg is back on the ice. It’s not quite the NHL…yet. He’ll be playing soon for the Swedish team for something called the Karjala Cup. Forsberg has been practicing with a team in Sweden, but this marks his first return to competitive play. Presumably, it gives Foppa a chance to test his ankle in a game condition. And, of course, it gives the 30-odd NHL teams who would love to sign Forsberg a chance to see him in action. The tournament runs from November 8th through the 11th. After that, you can bet there will be a mad clamor to get Peter into one of these ugly new NHL uniforms Reebok has everyone wearing this year.

Can they find the 8 million dollar man a boot that fits though? I mean, what the hell does it take? That never made sense to me.
If he’d be willing to play for $1m a year, I wouldn’t mind seeing him in an Avs uni. If not, take care Pete.
yeah, a million sounds about right.
or something.
He won’t get $8M/year, or $1M/year.
He’s gonna get between $3M-$4M for the next year, and maybe a little more as other teams become anxious about their scoring. And really it needs to be a team that needs another scorer, and one that can play him lightly until the playoffs.
The Avs have a ton of forward depth to limit his shifts. But seriously, the Pepsi Center is about 200 to 300 short of a sellout each night. That’s with a lot of money in the market going to the Rockies, the constant early season division of Bronco dollars and the new and improved Denver Nuggets who have a larger season ticket holder base. If the Avalanche sign Forsberg, from a pure business point of view they will be better off. They will sell all their tickets and he would probably pay for himself.
i have a hard time believing that Forsberg wouldn’t improve this team — we’d be able to roll 3 *good* scoring lines. Imagine Forsberg / Stastny / Hejduk. Imagine Bruno / Forsberg / Svatos. those are killer lines!
Don’t forget he’s a PP whiz too — an area that seem to be struggling for us. He could provide a huge boost just there.
I think he’s worth a pro-rated 4 million contract for a cup run at least.
I’d give him 5. Seriously, we’re running Arnason, Lapperriere and Smith out on the 3rd line. There was a time when Lappy was a solid 3rd liner, but I think those days are in the past and he’s much better off on the 4th line. Smith has never had any business being on the 4th line.
and yes, Dario has it right on both counts. The Avs are deep enough so that Forsberg wouldn’t have to even be in the lineup every night. And he would put some asses in the seats.
I’m now officially on the fence about Forsberg returning. I was adamantly against it before, but now I’m just kind of indecisive. He’d have to accept a relatively low amount of money, in my opinion, but the Avs can afford it, so it doesn’t really matter.
But, as far as Dario’s earlier comment: I never understood his ankle problems either. With all the advanced technology out there, why couldn’t his skate company just create a special, doctor-approved model for him? Why did he keep having problems with it? And how on earth does modern surgery fail to fix the same problem after two or three tries?
After reading about what the Avalanche doctors did to Keith Jones’ knee (see Jonesy for details), it’s a wonder poor Foppa can walk at all anymore.
I don’t think it is too much of a surprise that he can have a recurring ankle problem. Modern surgery may be good, but you can never look at every part of the ankle without stripping it to the bone. Scans don’t show everything.
And when you fix an area, it is never as strong as before it was first broken. All this advanced technology isn’t directed into creating an ice skate that minimises the force onto a (probably) unknown section of the ankle. The stresses and strains put through someone’s ankle as they skate will be extremely and fascinatingly complex.
Though even without the perfect skate, we should still sign him
.
Yeah Joe, that whole thing cracked me up and just didn’t pass the smell test for me. How could Philly not have like twenty new skates for him to try on every day, straight from the plant? It was like he was waiting on a custom built Bently or something. The other thing, is that while I sympathize with Forsberg and all the injuries he’s gone through. It does need to be said that there are kids skating on ponds every day in their older brother’s skates with extra socks stuffed in the toes. I know it’s a totally different case but on that payroll you’d think even if there was discomfort he’d still play. Let me put it this way, can you ever imagine Sakic or Smyth not playing because of discomfort? We’ve seen Sakic play with basically a separated shoulder and I think Smyth would play on one leg. I like Forsberg, I just never understood that whole situation in Philly with the skate. It just made no sense.
