Kevin Lowe finally wins! Anaheim decided not to match the ridiculous offer sheet the Oilers had signed Dustin Penner to. The Ducks get a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick for their troubles, and the Oilers get Penner for about $1.3 million less than they wouldn’t spend on Ryan Smyth. Nice work, Kevin!

Kevin Lowe finally wins!
You know when giving up a 1st, second, and 3rd pick and overpaying a guy you could have had instead of Lupul a year earlier is considered a win, well you know your team is in trouble
I think this is great. Edmonton overpays for someone who will now have to face a top defensive pairing who hasn’t proved he can do so yet. They also lose draft picks going in to a very strong draft.
Thankfully, Burke doesn’t get the Edomonton 1st the year after next for the Tavares sweepstakes. His loyalty to Bertuzzi and May backfire. His best defenseman is hanging him by the shorthairs while Burke is one month away from training camp.
None of this really does much except that a bad Edmonton team just guaranteed they will occupy the NW division cellar for several more years and the Ducks are going to suffer the Burke dreams of yesterday and the glorious success of the late Vancouver teams. All those Presidents trophies, WC championships and Stanely Cups do make it hard to tear yourself away. I heard no one has picked up Anson Carter yet, perhaps Burke can go all the way up to his cap for old times sake.
