I think linguists don’t like it being used the way I used it because that’s not it’s original meaning (kind of like how moot is never used correctly, like ” a moot point” ) but it’s been misused by so many people for so long that it now has the misused meaning.

So I guess it depends what you are: An elitest linguist, or a calm humble man of the people.

And since I’ve already jacked this thread, allow me to continue. Jibs, on that definition you linked, there are two competing usage notes. One says it is okay to use “infer” to mean “imply” because somebody in the 16th century did that. Then the next usage note at the bottom of the page says that using “infer” to mean “imply” is incorrect.

None of this is your fault, of course, but I think my head might explode.

How on earth does a word that means “to derive meaning, conclude or judge” also mean to hint or imply? How is that possible?

I wonder if they amended the definition of infer simply because it is so often misused.

Then again, who am I to argue with an online dictionary?
