Poti? Interesting. The only problem with this is that it seems Smyth is likely going to leave and the Islanders will be pressed by fans to lose all those free agents without saving some of them.

I think Anaheim proved again that success at the highest level in the NHL requires a solid back line, even in the "new" NHL. The hard part is the Avs can't just go out and grab a guy like Pronger. There's no one on the FA market like him, Neidermeyer or Lidstrom. It's just very rare, and they are always paid "more than Sakic" money. I don't see that ever happening. My only hope is in the trade market (in particular pre draft and the activity that goes up during that time of year) and in the draft itself. The Avalanche absolutely have to get better at drafting NHL calibre stay at home defensemen.

I agree with goalies and philosophically with the 4th line proposals. Guite, Lappy and another energy character that's hopefully stronger on the puck than either Lappy or Guite would be a solid 4th line. I think that 3rd spot is a likely rotation for rookies but some a free agent banger isn't beyond question.

I'll take Smyth and pay for him gladly. You probably can't go wrong with Forsberg if you're Avalanche management. He sells tickets and is a joy to watch. The big picture makes guys like Drury and Smyth more valuable in my mind but I don't think the Avs go wrong with any of them.

Avoid Yashin like the plauge.

You hate to say, status quo but I think the Avs were a solid first/second defensive pairing from not only being in the playoffs but competing quite well. Watching these playoffs, I saw a ton of lost opportunities.

So who would we have to center the second line when Forsberg gets injured?

I like your moves. I think $46M is low, every indication is that it will be at least $48M, so that gives the avs more options. I like the Poti signing a lot, and really think the Avs should make a move for him. I do think they need a good Defensive D-man though, not sure how solid Poti is in his own end.

Not sure about your take on Liles though, I know he had an off year, but I don't think it's time to give up on him yet. I'm confidant that he can be a #1 D man, and I'm not sold on Clark-Sauer as #2. Don't forget they have a great puck-moving prospect in the wings too (Kumisky)

In an ideal world I'd like to sign Weekes as a backup to Budaj, but this isn't an ideal world and we're stuck with Theo for one more season. To his credit he has been a good trooper, despite his terrible goaltending. Budaj has earned a chance at the #1 spot.

Overall I would be happy with these moves if they panned out. I think it would be enough to get the Avs into the second or maybe luck into the conference finals, without sacrificing any future plans, cap or picks. a great thing to build on.
