I’m not sure that I’ll be able to get these words all out before I break out into uncontrollable laughter. But, I’m going to try. Today, Mike Russo found a way to top the absurdity of his punching bag comment. Russo was explaining that it didn’t sound like Veilleux was going to be suspend by the eggheads running the NHL, since, you know, the game starts in just under 9 hours.
Fine.
But then he drops the bombshell of all unintentional comedy bombshells. This, my Avalanche-loving friends, is the mother lode. Are you ready for it? Okay, put down any liquids and pull up a chair:
Quite frankly, if Veilleux should be suspended, so should Tyler Arnason. His elbow on Keith Carney was the most vicious elbow I’ve seen at one of the games I’ve covered this year.
That’s right, folks, the guy with 8 hits in his last two seasons is a thug. So, if I’m getting this right, folks in Minnesota don’t know what a fight OR a vicious elbow looks like. Look, I can’t say the elbow didn’t happen, because it did. I do find it odd that Russo neglected to point out that Arnason was retaliating to the elbow Carney threw at him, but I guess that’s not important. But, really, the “most vicious elbow” he’s seen? Wow. Couldn’t they find anyone who actually, you know, watches hockey to cover the games?
I can’t search for video of said vicious elbow due to work filters, but if anyone can find a suspension-worthy clip of the incident I’ll post it. Spare me the rickrolls, please.

You’re actually going to say MN fans don’t know what a fight looks like? Seriously? Wrong. It’s d-bags like Laperriere, McLeod, and Guite who don’t know what a fight is. Throwing a cheap shot and hiding behind the ref? Running our skill players and then refusing to fight anyone bigger than my mom? They’ve got those things down to a science. I heard Lapperiere’s running an instructional camp on them starting next week.
Endless Drivel,
The only clear and obvious example of anyone running a skill player in this series was Veilleux’s unbelievable cheap shot on Stastny. So STFU until you know what the hell you are talking about. Hth.
I keep hearing all these Minnesotans talking about the Avs “running their skill players” (I mean if you are going to say it, change the wording from Russo’s blog, but not one person has been able to pinpoint a time when that happened.
If they could please provide an example, one youtube clip or something, that backs up this point they’d have a lot more credibility.
At least Veilleux had the sac to answer for that cheap shot (and I agree that it was cheap)by fighting Laperriere. Your guys pull that crap and then don’t think they have to pay for it. That’s gutless hockey, and you know it.
EW, we all know what gutless hockey is. Good for Veilleux for answering the bell. He’s still a pinhead for acting like a moron (including his antics AFTER the fight).
What we’re all trying to figure out, though, is what exactly Lappy and McLeod have done that would require them to fight?
Also, if they do fight someone, will it be okay for them to fight guys one at a time? Because it seems like the Wild prefer threesomes.
Jibbles there were 2 incidents of Av players running our skill players. Early in the 2nd period, gutless Guite boarded James Sheppard. In the 3rd Foote ran Gaborik hard into the net. But of course, those are clean hits to you bush leaguers……
That is it. The verdict is in. The Avs, and only the Avs, can issue one huge dose of STFU to all of the mindless Wild faithful tonight and Saturday. Please, for the love of Roy, put these morons out of their misery. Knock ‘em out of the playoffs and keep their SC count holding at zero.
DD, I can’t find any video of it online. I do have the game on my DVR still, but I’m not exactly sure how I would go about getting a clip off of it without a video camera.
I do know that calling it the most vicious elbow he’s ever seen, lol. I guess this is a good thing, right? Other teams always seem to have high opinions of The Smileless One, maybe we can trade him?
he could have a new career as an enforcer. as long as the team you are trying to intimidate has Keith Carney on the roster.
The comment about Arny’s elbow is hilarious. Man, that Arny is Hatcher and Pronger all rolled into one, isn’t he? Sometimes Russo seems somewhat intelligent. Other times, well … just wow. Is he an intern for the paper?
goofy, Gaborik did get pushed into the net. and Guite did board Shepard. Hell, lappy DID get a skirmish with Gaborik, one that was started BY Gaborik. But come on, that’s gone both ways all friggin series. You don’t hear us on your boards and papers complaining about Forsberg’s treatment or the numerous runs of theodore in the series, or the avs players that YOUR guys have put in the net.
putting those incidents on the same level as Velleiux’s hit is laughable. You’re just killing your credibility.
I don’t remember the Guite hit at all. Foote’s running Gaborik hard into the net seemed more on par with the body slam that Hill put on Forsberg in game 2.
Both fall into that “physical defenseman playing very physical with the other teams star player to take him out of the game” category (which is currently working on both players FYI). I didn’t have much of a problem with Hill on Forsberg. Foote’s hit on Gaborik was in the same vein.
And are we really going to start complaining about defensemen riding a forward hard into a net that he’s crashing? Really? That happens every single night. Turn on any playoff game and you’ll see a forward charging hard into the net and a defenseman take him out which causes the net to dislodge as the forward goes crashing into it. It’s normal, it happens.
Haha, all we can do is hope the Wild rely on their fans for scouting reports, I don’t have any problem with Lemaire designing his entire defense around stopping the ruthless powerforward that is Tyler Arnason.
i agree jibble, this is ridiculous to complain about this crap. I do remember the Guite penalty. It was just a hit and the guy had his back turned. No intent to injure, no leaving the feet, no aiming for the head, just Guite got him wrong.
To try and equate Velleiux’s hit with that is simply hilarious.
ima head home in a sec for lunch, i’ll see if i can wrangle a decent video out of my digital still camera of Arnason’s VICIOUS ELBOW OF DOOM, the Guite hit, and the Velleiux hit.
Whatever. Should I argue that hits are hits, the Stastny boarding was dangerous etc? It’s about “Hypocrisy”. The Wild fans are pissed that the Ducks gooned them last year to a chorus of Wild fan whining. Now the Wild are trying to follow suit, except the suit doesn’t fit.
Tyler Arnason completely destroyed Carney. I’m suprised Carney skated away from that. When Arnason throws an elbow even Scott Parker gets out of the way.
Arnason, a one..man..wrecking..machine.
You could tell the severity of Arny’s elbow by the stunned silence of the crowd. Would Carney get up? For the love of god, would he even survive? The horror. The horror.
Behold, I have returned and lo! I bring crappy video of the hits:
ELBOW OF DOOM
Guite’s boarding
…and the Veilleux hit
Arny’s was elbowing, no doubt. Carney embellished JUST A LITTLE, but still, the call was made, and rightfully so. Not THE WORST ELBOWING CALL EVAR though.
Guite’s hit was boarding — but a minor call. The guy had tuoched the puck, Guite didn’t really line him up, it was more a shove. Still, it was a little dangerous just becuase of the location, so a rightful minor boarding call.
Veilleux’s hit though…he a) left his feet b) hit a player that had not touched the puck c) put his head from behind straight into the boards d) clearly had lined up the hit for a couple strides. It should be a suspension, especially considering the timing within the game.
thank you doc!
Fuck it, I’m up for suspending Arnason (even after he played well last game).
I remember Guite’s boarding now… That’s what has everyone’s long underwear in a jumble? Really? Yikes.
And Shepperd had a whopping 19 points this season, Guite really went after a “skill”player there. To quote a famous St. Paul Native: Good Grief
Oh and doc…
What video editing software do you have, can you send me an e-mail (jibblescribbits@gmail.com) I have tivo and can DL from Tivo to the comp, but don’t have any video editing SW and don’t have a clue.
i have no video editing sw, i grabbed those with my DSC @ 320×240, and it saves them in quicktime format on the flash card. you can then upload quicktime straight to youtube. pretty simple.
the hardest part was keeping the camera still while I was eating, heh. I ended up sitting the camera on a chair in front of the TV.
So it appears that the NHL has chosen to join Veilleux in the gutless club today by not suspending him? Great, just fricken great.
This page is pure comedy gold. I love it.
After seeing the video again, I have to say, that..was..awesome.
Ok but seriously, it was a bit harder than I remembered. I mean, I’m seeing the incident through a filter that includes the name “Arnason” so can you blame me?
But most vicious elbow he’s ever seen? I know he didn’t just start covering hockey and can remember plays such as this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hzlI1TqL6w
Actually, up until Tuesday night, Russo was covering bubble hockey, where the players actually are physically unable to make contact with one another with their elbows. This is the only rational explaination I can think of for his statement.
Nevermind. I think I see Russo’s point now. He must have seen the hit from this angle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MKtA_nJLbc&feature=related
Boy that Arnason is sure going to get what he deserves tonight…LOL. I guess it’s OK for Carney to get the elbow up but not for Arny to give it right back.
Guite, OK he got a penalty, rightfully so, not the smartest hit.
Veilluex, the League just show it has no clue what it’s own rules are by not suspending this creep. It is clear he leaves his feet and that in of itself should warrant a suspension. But add boarding to it and the 2 game misconducts and this guy should be in the press box for at least a game or two. Then of course his second misconduct came after the final buzzer, that crap shouldn’t be tolerated by this league either.
Woo Hoo! There is no lower life form in hockey than the POS that falls down trying to draw a penalty whenever he takes contact. I’m SO happy it finally cost you. Please, Floppa, keep doing it!
Are any of you Avs pseudo-fans actually watching the game?
You got that word “gutless” from me, Bob, from post #5. You know so well what gutless looks like from watching your own team.
EW, we post in threads on hfboards and at mile high hockey during games. We come here for brilliant analysis after games.
Also: Theo > *.mild
[EDIT]I’ve never edited a comment, Bob, but I couldn’t leave this one up. I just can’t have you jinxing things on us now. Hope you can forgive me.

PS just noticed your email address. Two thumbs up on that.
I wonder in EW will show his head again after this game. Wolski “bench me again Q” plays just 10:39 and score his second goal of the series and the game winner. SonOfStastny picks up his first for the insurance.
But Jose “pimp cane” Theodore absolutely stole this game from the Wild.
On another note…EW, at least Avs fan are classy enough to not cheer when an opposing player goes to the bench injured.
Ooops. Wolski didn’t have the GWG. SOS did do to that pesky Rolston.
I remember how much whining the Dallas fans did about Steve Ott’s hit on Leoprone, but the Wild’s fans have put them to shame. Is there a bigger group of crybabies anywhere? Oh my god, they’re getting more pathetic by the day.
DD,
You should edit my one erroneously entered under “Bpb in Boulder” too! I thought about that after I did it. Don’t want to create bad mojo. EW was just pissing me off. Backstrom will have a shutout Saturday night. Backstrom is great. Backstrom, Backstrom, Backstrom.
fixed, Bpb!
Thanks Net Mojo Nanny.
(at least the “p” is next to the “o” and I didn’t misuse the word “through”)
I would NEVER imply that you’d do something like that.
