I support three 20 minute periods of 3-on-3.

And I wish I could get my girlfriend to consider a little 2-on-1, ifyouknowwhatimean.

I like the 3 point idea. As you say, it worked in football ('soccer').

People still play for a draw though. But there is no OT - so the chances of seeing it through to a draw are higher, and a draw can be a huge achievement against better teams. People only play for a draw if they are massively outmatched by the other. And it often fails...

If the YoungStars game proved anything this year, it's that if nothing was settled in 5 or 10-minutes of 4-on-4 OT, it sure as hell will be settled after about 30 seconds of 3-on-3...

I could live with Selanne's suggestion. I just see teams picking up "Shootout specialists" then playing for the shootout and winning there.

I guess I don't mind ties, especially after an 8 or 10 minute 4 vs 4 OT. Ties would be pretty rare.

I wouldn't mind having a 3pt series. 3pts for regulation win. 2pts for OT/SO win and 1pt for the loser. But it would be interesting to see if it would motivate players/coaches to go for the 3pts are sit back like they are now trying to make sure they get at least the 1pt.

10 minute OT would be great as well.
And I agree Selanne "But no shootout in the playoffs…EVER.

I am, and always will be, an advocate of 10min 4 vs 4 OT, followed by a five player per side shootout. 2 pts for a win, 0 for a regulation loss, 0pts for an ot or shootout loss. If football can resolve overtime on a coin flip, hockey certainly can on a shootout.

I think the solution is to drop the shootout, go to 8min 4-vs-4 OT and 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie, 0 for a loss. This was more or less the solution that Soccer used to keep coaches from playing for a tie, and it worked nicely.
