Ever since yesterday afternoon, I’ve been going over in my head how I’d talk about the Avs new monstrosities…I mean jerseys. I love hockey jerseys; I own more than I can count and was incredibly excited (and a bit nervous) to see what the Avalanche would unveil yesterday. In honor of the unveiling, I wore my beloved Sakic 3rd jersey.
And then…this:

Talk about a letdown. I really don’t understand how they could have gotten so many things wrong. The team has taken what was one of the most uniquely interesting designs in the league and turned it into some sort of 3rd rate roller hockey pullover. Awful. I get that teams want to change things up a bit to help drive new jersey sales - I don’t begrudge anyone of trying to make a semi-honest buck. But, jeez, couldn’t they have tweaked the jerseys in a GOOD way? These new things are just awful. I’ve been trying since yesterday, but I have yet to be able to come up with one good thing to say about them. About the best I can do is that they’ll still have the arched letters on the nameplate. Woohoo. Congratulations on not fucking up one thing, Colorado. Everything else about them is a complete jump in the wrong direction.
I’d go on…but Joe at Mile High Hockey has already summed up a lot of what I was going to say about these little gems.
I don’t like to wish ill on anything Av related, but I hope people avoid buying these like the plague. I’d love for the team to get a clear message that this awful decision needs to be undone as soon as possible.

I agree. Nothing good about them at all. I will not be spending any $$ on these…
What are the odds that the team would revert to the old jerseys? Is there precedent for that happening in the NHL or any other league?
I think they are pretty close to having a good jersey. Don’t get me wrong, I hate them, but a couple of tweaks and it could be very good.
Admittedly, in my mind the ‘tweaks’ would involve reverting to something closer to the old one…
Oh, and another thing. Why is it that hockey jerseys rarely change in the US? Or am I just slow and it is simply the Avs not changing them.
English football teams change them pretty much yearly. Normally subtle changes, but they still change. Same with cricket. Sells more merchandise, and allows you to remove a particularly bad one from circulation quickly. My football team even had a fan vote between 4 shirts once. Which I thought was nice.
I’ve seen my teams in some bad kit. But you always tend to get used to it. Arsenal reverted to a dark red (As opposed to light red with white) to celebrate 100 years at thier ground or something. It was awful at first, but come the start of the next season when they were back in the light red, it was also a bit of a shock. Everyone was used to the retro shirt.
If they would just move the piping to where the red and blue meet down the shoulders, that would be an awesome jersey. Extremely simple.
I am sure I am in the minority here, but I hated the old unis (especially that putrid Rangers ripoff 3rd they had) and was looking forward to seeing what they would do with the new style. I like the piping on these, and would actually consider buying one if it weren’t for the shoulders.
You see, you can shift from a dark color to white or vice-versa without needing to break things up.
Here’s an example:

But if you’re going from one dark color to another, they will clash if you don’t break them up. These clash.
Oh well. If everyone hates them as much as I have read (not a single positive review), and they hold to their guns (which they won’t), then we’ll see them go in short order.
the old Rangers “ripoff”jersey may be my favorite hockey jersey of all time. I love those… hopefully they’ll be on clearence
I didn’t like the 3rd. There wasn’t enough of the blue on it.
And I agree with you Thomas - but the piping on the sleeve/shoulder instead of where it is and it would be decent.
I agree with the above suggestions: piping on the shoulders and sleeves, not the chest. Seems pretty obvious to us, why wasn’t it obvious to the Avalanche design team? Or did they just defer to RBK on where to put the design elements?
Somebody needs to be fired.
