Marek “Eric” Svatos has been tendered a qualifying offer by the Colorado Avalanche. The offer is for $1,050,000 - the minimum required deal. As a restricted free agent Svatos can sign with another team. If he does, the Avs can choose to match the contract or let him go and receive draft pick compensation (a 2nd rounder if his contract is under $2 million). Given his poor season, I don’t expect many teams to have Marek’s agent on speed dial this summer. Barring a holdout, it looks like Svatos will be back. Here’s hoping for a big career rebound.

The Svatos “poor season” is a dead link DD.
I think someone would offer Svatos 1.5 for a second round pick. That potential is very enticing. It’s a very small risk of the Avs though with the rights to match and all the depth they have at forward. I still don’t know what his problem was last year mentally. He played the game like he had the shakes. In the end, his timid play from physical contact paid off. Instead of suffering another shoulder injury he gets another million dollars. I’m not sure if he weighed the pros vs cons directly with this play last season but it was altered so much from his previous play I can’t help but think some of that came in to play.
Hopefully coach Q doesn’t stick him on the first line for a quarter of the season before he figures out Svatos is there just to cherry pick.
link is fixed now - thanks.
I thought of one bit of fallout in the event Svatos gets grabbed by another team. Svatos + a draft pick is sort of the default “what random player on team x” is worth to 95% of the people posting on the Avs board or the HF Board. What would we give for Jagr? Svatos and a pick. Marleau? Svatos and a pick. Foote? Svatos and a pick.
if he goes, I guess Karlis Skrastins will have to carry on the torch.
Ha! How about Petr Franek and a pick?
No for the REALLY good player it’s Skrastins, Svatos and a pick
