Career: In his 2nd year in the league (and first almost-full season),
Report: Richardson spent much of the first half of the season centering the 4th line, a role that he really isn’t well suited for…In the 2nd half, bounced around among all four lines, playing most often on the 3rd line with Tyler Arnason and Ian Laperriere…Has good speed, but excellent explosiveness – can get from a standstill to top speed very quickly…Played a total of 211 minutes on the penalty kill, tops among forwards…The 26 PP goals scored by opponents while he was on the ice was also tops, unfortunately…Richardson had 3 SH goals, tops on the team and the only Avalanche with multiple shorties…Awful at faceoffs (40.8%), a key attribute for a guy centering a checking line or the PK…Overall, I was not very impressed with Richardson’s defensive game, another reason I feel there are better options than him for the PK / checking role…Offensively, however, Richardson had some nice flashes of promise…In the 2nd half, playing on scoring lines, he had 9 goals, tied for 5th on the team…Has a deceptively good wrist shot, which he needs to use more often…Is not afraid to go into the corners even though he looks like he could be knocked over by a strong wind…His eight assists, though, is almost laughable…Essentially, he needs to handle the puck more in the offensive zone in an effort to create more scoring chances for him and his linemates…His speed and hands make him a good forechecker…He had a bunch of steals, especially late in the season, leading me to believe he’s going to get even better in that area…Had 3 goals in the 6 games he played with Sakic and Brunette and generally played well enough in those games to warrant more ice time on the top line…He was a scratch for 6 games, and also missed 3 games after being demoted to the AHL for a week in January.
Fast Fact: 11 of his 14 goals were scored on the road

…and you know the guy who’s going to disagree!
Ok, if you put Richardson on the same plate with Joe Sakic on the grading curve then you can justify a C+ grade (That makes Parker a J- but that’s another story). But Richardson got delt a big pile of crap this year. The coaches did him absolutely no favors and it’s a testimate to his character that he carved a niche as a defensive forward.
Look, Richardson came out of the OHL as an offensively gifted forward. This is a kid that as a 3rd, then 2nd liner in the OHL dropped 67 points. He then broke his leg and still played 15 games at a point per game clip. His final year he was three short of 100 points. His whole MO going in to the NHL was a quick, offensively gifted forward. Let me point out that he played with absolutely no one of note on his lines with the Owen Sound. He was the focus. Furthermore, this isn’t the WHL or the QJHML. It’s the most defensively minded league in the CHL. Anyway, the kid has gifts offensively.
He finished the year +4. He played with guys that, um don’t score. No really, they don’t score at all. Yet, he still dropped 22pts. He averaged only 10 minutes of even strength play.
As far as his defensive play is concerned, I can’t disagree more here. He was great on the defensive end. His PK time and even strength +/- (with no scoring mind you) bear that out. He got pushed around in the corners, I agree but he was agressive on the puck and took shifts out of the scoring areas. Often times, his even strength shifts consisted of killing time so the first line could shift out.
His assist numbers do suck, but frankly speaking even if he placed it on a plate in front of Roman Turek, who of his linemates is going to score it? His numbers in the OHL and AHL show a 50/50 split on assists to goals and he can set up teammates. His speed, skill set and talent are wasted in the roll he was given.
phew. for a minute there I thought you were going to make a liar out of me!
I do think we’re in agreement on a big key area - he wasn’t used properly this year. You and I both were vocal whenever Richardson got a chance to play with Sakic, played well, and then moved down to make way for Wolski.
you’ve got an excellent rebuttal.
I disagree with that C+. I also dont think that he was used properly. Our coach was acting stupid just like he always does and never really gave him fair chance to shine. He played awesome with Sakic and we should have left him there for a while, Wolski certaintly didnt earn the spot on the top line. He was up and down all season and should have been moved down to give another guy a chance, to give Richcardson a chance. He played well and I think that he is only going to get better as the years come. But lets be fair next time Quinville!!!
