10.24.07Game Notes: Game 9, Avalanche at Oilers1st Period 20:00 As predicted, the Oilers prepared a lengthy video tribute to Ryan Smyth. The Alberta native received a touching standing ovation before the game. Smyth's emotion was obvious as he stood on the ice before the opening faceoff. 19:58 Budaj vs Roloson tonight. Nice to see Quenneville sticking with Budaj. 19:16 Not only does the game feature two divisional rivals, but it also showcases two of the worst of the Reebyuck jersey redesigns. 10.23.07Shift charts are (sort of) backIn case you hadn't noticed, the NHL has dumped their shift charts this year as part of their, um, "revamped" stats display. If you are unfamiliar, here's an example from last year. They were a valuable tool, and I miss them as much as Tapeleg does. So, I wrote a program to make a shift chart of my own: It's kind of crude for now, but I have some ideas to tweak it down the road. 10.22.07Game Recap: Wild 3, Avalanche 2It was their best road game of the season, but the outcome was still the same. The Avalanche played well against the 1st-place Wild, but allowed a late goal for the 2nd straight game to lose 3-2. While the outcome isn't terrific, I felt the team played much better as a whole than they did against Chicago. The Wild have allowed just 11 goals in 8 games - tops in the league - but the Avalanche hung in tough until the end. Continue Reading...

Purinton was assessed a match penalty with no time remaining in the second period for punching an unsuspecting opponent and causing injury on Wednesday."An incident such as this has no place in our game," AHL president David Andrews said in announcing the suspension Friday. After a lengthy, 6-game stretch as the starting goalie, Peter Budaj is being benched on Friday in favor of Jose Theodore. Theodore, of course, looked steady in the Avs dramatic comeback victory on Tuesday night. But, seriously? Are we really going to have to endure the rotating goalie situation again? 10.17.07Recap: Avalanche 5, Flames 4 (SO)Wow. If you saw the game, you know what I mean. If you didn't...you missed a wild one. The Avs continued their winning ways at home in a game that featured extreme momentum swings and open, end-to-end action. When the dust finally settled, Colorado had a 5-4 shootout victory. And what a ride it was to get there. Colorado started the game looking terrible on defense - completely mesmerized by the Calgary defensemen joining in on the offensive plays.
