There aren't many givens in life. But, the next time the Coyotes play the Avalanche you can probably make some cash betting that a) Colorado will jump to an early lead and b) almost blow that lead. 3/27 Vancouver 3, Colorado 0 Avalanche Recaps | (1)
Inthecheapseats returns today, after a brief absence due to illness. Unfortunately, it's to recap a tough, tough loss for the Avalanche. The team - including Jose Theodore - played well overall, but, in the end, couldn't get anything past Roberto Luongo and couldn't keep Ken Klee out of the motherfucking penalty box. Calgary, of course, won last night, stretching the deficit to 7 points with just 6 games left. The Avs essentially have to win it out, and hope for help from the Flames. Thanks for nothing, Nashville Avalanche Notebook | (2)
This will be really quick, as I am very under the weather today. Nashville had a 2-1 lead late in the 3rd period last night, but couldn't hold it. Craig Conroy scored with under 4 minutes to go in regulation, and then Rhett Warrener scored 1:27 into OT. The Avs need to win against the Oilers tonight to maintain their 4-point deficit, and stay in control of their playoff destiny. Karlis Skrastins is a definite "no" for tonight (per the RMN), but will be evaluated to possibly play Sunday in Vancouver.

03/21 Colorado 5, Edmonton 1 Avalanche Recaps | (6)
I knew the Oilers were struggling. Devastated by injuries, out of the playoff hunt, heart and soul traded to Long Island. I knew they were dressing 4 rookie defensemen, and that a decent number of Edmonton fans are actually pulling (secretly or not) for the Avs to overtake the Flames and make the playoffs. Even so, I wasn't really prepared for what I saw last night. Simply terrible, terrible hockey from the Oilers. Flames win Avalanche Notebook | (7)
Calgary dropped the Red Wings last night 2-1, pulling 6 points ahead of the Avs in the playoff race. I didn't watch all of the game, but it looked like the Flames stepped up their game last night - nothing like a little pressure to kick your game into high gear. Colorado has a chance to keep pace tonight, taking on the Oilers in Edmonton. Edmonton has dropped 11 in a row, is ravaged by injuries, and has angered fans by trading away Ryan Smyth. Rooting for the Wings Avalanche Notebook | (4)
One of my odder quirks is that I actually like the Detroit Red Wings (Hasek and Chelios excluded). So, it won't be too difficult for me to pull for them tonight. For the rest of you? Yeah, it's going to be odd. Detroit takes on Calgary tonight in Calgary, and, of course, Avalanche fans are hoping for a Detroit win - just this one time. 3/18 Colorado 4, San Jose 3 (OT) Avalanche Recaps | (6)
I will readily admit that I thought this season was over a couple of weeks ago, but the Avalanche have just refused to give up, playing suberb hockey in the month of March. They entered the weekend 8 behind the 8th place Flames. We end up with the "best case" scenario - Calgary loses their game, we win both of ours. We now sit just 4 back of the Flames. It's down to 6. It was touch and go for a while, but, ultimately, Saturday night turned out all right. The Avs won, and the Wild beat the Flames (in regulation, no less). I didn't expect to get to this point, but we can now say that Colorado is in the playoff hunt - just 6 back of the Flames, with a game in hand and 2 head to head matchups left. Calgary lost to Dallas last night 4-2. It was yet another road loss for the Flames, who are now 9-18-8 away from home. The Flames are still 8 ahead of the Avalanche, but we now have a game in hand. Coming up for the teams: on Saturday, Calgary takes on the Wild at home, a game Calgary will desperately want to win (they trail the Wild by 5 points in the standings, and, I think, are still more concerned with moving up their seed than the Avs catching them). And the hits just keep on coming. The Avalanche continue their recent trend of strong defensive hockey and drop the Flames 3 to 2. Colorado almost completely dominated Calgary in the last two periods, outshooting the Flames 31 to 10.
