2/27 Colorado 3, Columbus 2 Avalanche Recaps | (10)
If you went to bed early, you missed the only exciting part of the game: the final 3 minutes. Up until then, it was a Grade A snoozer, with each team getting just 23 shots on net. Mayday is over Avalanche Notebook | (0)
Brad May has been dealt to the Anaheim Ducks for G Michael Wall. Anaheim adds even more toughness (although May has no fighting majors this year mostly due to his surgically repaired shoulder). Colorado adds goaltending depth - as an organization they don't have a ton of options beyond Peter Budaj and Jose Theodore. Speaking of guys involved in the Steve Moore incident, old friend Todd Bertuzzi has been traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Unfortunately, any thought of a spark to the rivalry might be premature. 2/25 Anaheim 5, Colorado 3 Avalanche Recaps | (2)
No California dreamin' here. Colorado dropped two painful games to the SoCal teams this weekend. The Avs should have gotten at least 3 points out of the deal...but took home just 1. The playoffs are no longer even on the table. What remains now is the NHL trading deadline tomorrow at 3PM Eastern (if Craig Rivet can net a 1st round pick, what could a guy like Arnason or Vaananen reel in?), and then just play out the season to build for next year. 2/17 LA 6, Colorado 5 (SO) Avalanche Recaps | (0)
Not a proper recap today, as I slept through about 95% of the game. Colorado lost a couple of 2-goal leads in the 3rd period, and former Avalanche tied the game with 3.9 seconds left to force OT. The Avs get a point, but lose ground in the West with the Flames winning. The trade deadline is Tuesday. I look for the Avs to be sellers, but probably only in some minor deals. 2/22 Minnesota 4, Colorado 3 Avalanche Recaps | (6)
Colorado loses again, but it's not for lack of effort. The Avs have been playing very good hockey recently, but it isn't showing up in the standings. Colorado is 4-7 in their last 11 games. It wasn't exactly the best of days for me. I'm starting to come down with a cold, and, since I was mostly immobilized on the couch, I was forced to sit through 2 hours of American Idol with my wife before I got to watch the game. But once I got to the Avs, my day brightened considerably. Not only did the Avs win (and pulled to within 8 points of they final playoff spot), but they seemed to have gotten the Flaming Monkey off of their back. Leopold's 1st season in Colorado has been an unmitigated disaster. He started the season missing the first 25 games recovering from hernia surgery. He came back for 5 games before missing 17 more with a groin injury. This time around, he made it 10 days before breaking a wrist Thursday against Calgary. To date, he's missed 44 games on the season. For the season, Colorado is 6-8-1 without Leopold and 22-19-3 with him.

It isn't over yet, but that fork is starting to poke. Colorado had a chance this weekend to get back into the race. A win on Saturday and Sunday, and the Avs today are 5 points behind the Wild for the final playoff spot and just 6 points out of first in the NW. Obviously, that didn't happen. Colorado lost both games, and now trail the Wild by 9 points. Colorado needs 5 more wins than Minnesota in the remaining 23 games, and that's going to be tough to accomplish. Continue Reading...
