Minnesota has been a defensive juggernaut to this point, having held opponents to 2 goals or less in 9 of their first 10 games. 10.26.0610/25 Washington 5, Colorado 3First things first: I missed the first two periods of this game. The Avs are important to me, but so are the Lost castaways. I came in just in time to see Alex Ovechkin's newest highlight reel addition - his glass-shattering check on Karlis Skrastins. Colorado peppered Olaf Kolzig with 48 shots in the game (22 in the 3rd period), but came out on the losing end again. Colorado's powerplay continues to hurt their chances. 10.24.0610/23 Colorado 6, Los Angeles 1Rob Blake's return to Colorado wasn't quite as disastrous as Jose Theodore's return to Montreal, but it certainly didn't play out the way he drew it up in his mind. Colorado thumped the struggling Kings 6-1. Blake, the highest paid player on the ice, was a non-factor, mustering two shots, no hits, and less than 19 minutes of ice time - no King defensemen had less even-strength minutes than Blake. 10.19.0610/18 Colorado 4, Toronto 1Everyone can exhale now. The Avs rebuilding effort is put off for just a little bit longer. For the first three minutes of the game, it looked like this was going to be a long night - all the play was in Colorado's zone, and Toronto scored an early soft goal by Bates Battaglia of all people. It describes the 16 minor penalties, from Laperriere's retaliation penalty in the first to Liles' interference pick to kill any chance at a rally in the third. It describes the officiating (many calls were warranted, but there were several week ones in there as well). It describes Michael Handzus' hair (wtf, dude?). This time, Colorado, having played the evening before and arriving in Minnesota around 3 AM, was outjumped early on by the pumped up Wild. Minnesota outshot Colorado 11-5 in the first period, and held a 2-0 lead early in the second. The Avs turned things around though, battling hard when they could have easily just mailed it in and started thinking about next week's homestand.
