Talk about a post-Christmas hangover! The Avalanche entered the Christmas break on a high note, having scratched their way to first place in the Northwest and winning 5 of their previous 6 games. The special teams were on fire (just 6 PP goals against in 10 games), the offense was clicking (4+ goals in 6 of the last 8 games). Heck, even the defense and goaltending was solid, with the Avs holding opponents to two goals or less in 7 of the previous 10 games. On the surface, there's a lot of things to be satisfied with about the latest loss. Colorado played relatively well, and got defeated by a dramatically improved St Louis team (not to mention Avs killer Manny Legace). Other than the first St Louis goal, scored by Martin Rucinsky after Ken Klee just flat out gave up on defense, the Avs can't really be faulted for too much for their on-ice play. The teams have split the previous two matchups, each by a 4-1 margin. The Blues are in Denver (they flew in early to beat the snow), so the status of the game will depend solely on the snow. The first place Colorado Avalanche (that sounds nice) host the Stars tonight. Avs are 0-1-1 against the Stars this year, losing 3-2 in OT in Game 1 and 5-4 in Game 21. I'm not sure where to begin. This one was wild! It was a wide-open, back-and-forth affair - both teams squandered 2-goal leads. The momentum changed about as often as Britney Spears goes commando. For both teams, the goaltending was suspect, the defense was terrible. The Avalanche could very easily have lost this one, but, for a change, came out on the winning side of a one-goal game. According to the Denver Post, Marek Svatos is out for tonight's Oilers game (and maybe the week) with a sore groin. Brad Richardson is expected to be back tonight (elbow).
